34 Minutes in Miami, 2 Hours in Iceland

On June 21st, golden hour lasts 34 minutes in Miami and 117 minutes in Reykjavik. Same planet, same sunset clock, a nearly four-to-one gap in usable shooting time. If you’ve ever shot a destination wedding somewhere unfamiliar and had the light vanish faster than you planned for — or linger so long you didn’t know when to stop — this is why.
It’s not the sunset time, it’s the angle of approach
Golden hour is the window while the sun climbs from the horizon up to roughly 6° of elevation in the morning, and drops from 6° back down to the horizon in the evening. Everyone times it the same way conceptually. What changes by location is how fast the sun crosses that six-degree band, and that comes down to the angle its path makes with the horizon.
Near the equator, the sun rises and sets almost straight up and down — it punches through the golden-hour band quickly, whatever the season. Move toward the poles and the sun’s daily path tilts, meeting the horizon at a shallower and shallower angle. A shallow approach means the sun spends much longer at low elevation before it actually sets, and golden hour stretches out to match. It’s the same geometry that gives Arctic summers their “midnight sun” — the sun’s path gets so flat it barely dips below the horizon at all.
The actual numbers
Running the same sun-position math that powers our golden hour calculator for June 21, 2026:
- Quito, Ecuador (0.2°S) — 30 minutes
- Miami (25.8°N) — 34 minutes
- New York (40.7°N) — 41 minutes
- London (51.5°N) — 54 minutes
- Reykjavik (64.2°N) — 117 minutes
- Tromsø, Norway (69.7°N) — no discrete window at all. Around the summer solstice the sun’s lowest point of the day only dips to about 3° above the horizon, so the entire “night” sits inside the golden-hour band. It’s not a golden hour up there in June, it’s a golden day.
That’s a real range you’d hit if you shot weddings in all six cities that week — from a 30-minute sprint to unlimited soft light, using nothing but a change in latitude.
It also explains why the old “start an hour before sunset” rule is only right by accident. In Miami, golden hour doesn’t begin until 34 minutes before sunset — an hour out, the sun is still sitting at roughly 11°, too high and too harsh. In Reykjavik in June, golden hour starts almost two hours before sunset, so showing up “an hour early” means you’ve already burned through the first half of the window before you press the shutter. A fixed 60-minute rule is only ever right for the one latitude and season where golden hour happens to run about 60 minutes long.
Season moves the number almost as much as location does
Latitude isn’t the whole story — the sun’s path also flattens out whenever its arc across the sky sits low, and that happens near the winter solstice too, not just at high-latitude summer. Take London: golden hour runs about 44 minutes at the equinox, 54 minutes at the June solstice, and a surprising 62 minutes at the December solstice — longer than in June, because a low winter sun crosses the horizon at a shallower angle than a high summer one does, even though the days themselves are shorter and colder. It’s a big part of why Nordic and Scottish winter light photographs the way it does: not just less daylight, but daylight that stays low and warm-colored for longer stretches of it.
The practical version: don’t assume a location’s golden hour behaves the same way in every season, and don’t assume two cities at similar sunset times give you similar shooting windows. Latitude and time of year work together, and the only way to know your actual number is to check the date and place you’re actually shooting, not a rule of thumb from somewhere else.
What this means for booking client sessions

If you’re used to shooting mid-latitude weddings where golden hour is a reliable 40-ish minutes, and you take a summer booking somewhere considerably farther north, you can end up either rushing a session that should’ve had two unhurried hours, or padding a timeline for a window that closes in half the time you budgeted. Check the real window before you build the shot list, not after you land.
There’s a second-order cost to this too: a two-hour golden hour at a high latitude isn’t just longer, it’s more frames.
