How Many Megapixels Do You Need for the Prints You Sell?

A 24 MP camera - 6000 x 4000 pixels, the sensor in most mid-range full-frame bodies sold today - prints a genuinely sharp 40 x 27 inch canvas for a living room wall. The same file only reaches 20 x 13 inches if you grade it against the 300 DPI standard most photographers learned as “professional quality.” Same pixels, same file, two very different answers, and the gap between them is the number of print sales photographers turn down for no reason.
The number depends on where you draw the line
Megapixels don’t have a fixed print ceiling. A pixel count only becomes an inch measurement once you decide how many dots you’re packing into each inch, and that decision should come from how close someone stands to look at the print, not from a rule you memorized once. An album spread gets held twelve inches from someone’s face. A canvas over a sofa gets viewed from across the room. Grading both against the same DPI number is where the confusion starts - and it’s the exact mechanism the DPI rule most photographers get wrong walks through in more detail.
For this post, use four DPI tiers that cover the range you’ll actually sell into:
- 300 DPI - gallery grade, for anything held in the hand: album pages, boudoir prints, small desk frames.
- 240 DPI - visually excellent for nearly everything, including most framed prints on a wall at normal room distance.
- 180 DPI - solid for wall art viewed a few feet back, still holds detail on close inspection.
- 150 DPI - the floor for large pieces viewed from across a room, a sofa canvas or a venue-sized print.
The megapixel-to-print-size table
Pixel dimensions below assume a standard 3:2 sensor, the ratio in nearly every full-frame and APS-C camera. Crop to a different ratio and you’re printing fewer of these pixels, not more - more on that below.

The 45 and 61 MP rows aren’t rounded for convenience - they’re the real pixel counts off two current high-resolution bodies. Nikon’s Z8 and Canon’s R5 Mark II both sit at roughly 45 MP (8256 x 5504 and similar), and Sony’s A7R V ships a 9504 x 6336 sensor, which is where the “61 MP” marketing number comes from. If you shoot one of those, you can read your row straight off the table. If you shoot a 24 MP body - still the most common resolution across current full-frame cameras - you have exactly enough for a true 300 DPI 20 x 13 print or a 150 DPI 40 x 27 canvas, and nothing to spare for a hard crop on top of that.
Phone shooters: a current flagship’s main sensor - the iPhone 17 Pro sits at 48 MP, and current Android flagships run anywhere from 48 to 50 MP - usually outputs in a 4:3 ratio rather than 3:2, and most default photo modes downsample to a 12 MP file unless you shoot in the camera’s RAW or “high-res” mode. Check which mode actually saved the file before promising a client a size off the sensor spec alone.
Where photographers actually get burned
The table above is honest math on the full frame. Three things quietly shrink the number you’re actually working with, and none of them show up until you try to deliver:
Cropping. Print size comes from the pixels you keep, not the pixels the sensor captured. Crop a 24 MP frame down 30% on each side in post and you’re printing something closer to 12 MP, which knocks that 40 x 27 wall canvas down to roughly 28 x 19 - a full size tier smaller than what the client thinks they ordered off your camera’s spec sheet.
Panorama and grid crops. The same math applies to any tool that slices or reshapes a frame - a 9:4 crop for a panorama, or a tight square for social, is printing fewer pixels than the original file, not the same file in a different shape.
Aspect ratio mismatches. A 3:2 sensor doesn’t divide evenly into an 8 x 10 or 11 x 14 frame - those ratios are closer to 4:5. Ordering a standard frame size off a 3:2 file means either cropping content off two edges or printing with a white border, and it’s worth deciding which one before the file goes to the lab, not after.
Run your own file’s actual pixel count - after any crop - through the print size calculator rather than trusting the table above for anything but a full, uncropped frame. Type the megapixels or paste the pixel dimensions, pick a viewing distance, and it grades every standard print size against DPI directly in your browser. Nothing about the file leaves your machine to get that answer.
The conversation this changes
When a client asks for a specific size, “let me check the file” is a better answer than either guessing or quoting the safest tiny print you can think of. A 45 MP body genuinely supports a 55-inch canvas at wall-viewing DPI - that’s a sale a photographer shooting the same scene on a 12 MP body simply cannot make, cropping or not. Knowing your camera’s real ceiling, and where a crop eats into it, is what lets you say yes to a big print order with confidence instead of hedging, or turn one down for the honest reason instead of a guess.
It’s the same instinct behind sizing a print to the room it’s hanging in rather than a size chart: the furniture tells you what size to recommend, and the megapixel count tells you whether the file can honestly deliver it. Check both before you quote, and you’ll rarely be surprised by either end of that conversation.
