How to Split One Photo Into a Nine-Post Instagram Grid

The short answer: Instagram’s profile grid shows every tile at 3:4, so cut nine tiles at 1080 × 1440 out of a mural that’s 3240 × 4320, and post them in reverse — bottom-right corner first, top-left last. Instagram’s profile grid stopped being square in 2025, and a lot of the guides still telling you to cut nine 1080 × 1080 tiles haven’t caught up. Measure a live profile and the numbers come back 3:4. On a desktop browser @instagram renders each thumbnail at 311 × 414; on a narrower window @natgeo comes back 124 × 165. Different sizes, same ratio — 0.75 — and every one of them is set to crop from the centre to fill its slot.
For a normal post that’s a detail. For a mural stitched out of nine posts it’s the whole job, because the crop happens nine separate times and the seams have to survive all of them.
The ratio that decides whether the seams meet
The size most photographers already know is 4:5 — 1080 × 1350 — and it is still the right call for ordinary feed posts, because it takes up the most screen space as someone scrolls. But 4:5 is wider than 3:4. Drop a 4:5 tile into a 3:4 slot and the height matches while the width overflows, so Instagram trims roughly 6% off the sides, about 3% from each edge.
That is survivable on a single portrait. Across a grid it is fatal: every tile pulls its own edges inward, so the line that ran off the right side of one tile no longer meets the line entering the left side of its neighbour. The mural goes subtly crooked, and it looks like a cutting mistake rather than a cropping one.
Some 2026 sizing guides have this backwards and describe the grid as cropping to 4:5, or as trimming the top and bottom. It’s worth ten seconds in your browser’s inspector to check for yourself rather than trusting any chart, this one included. Instagram also added 3:4 as a native upload ratio in May 2025, which is what makes a clean mural possible at all — the shape you cut is a shape it accepts.
The resolution you need before you cut anything
Each tile wants to land at 1080 × 1440, the native 3:4 size. Three across and three down means the assembled mural needs to be:
3240 × 4320 pixels — about 14 megapixels — in a 3:4 crop.
Most current camera files clear that comfortably, but not always in the direction you expect. A 24 MP body shooting 6000 × 4000 is landscape, and a 3:4 portrait crop out of it is limited by height: 4000 tall gives you 3000 wide, so the mural is 3000 × 4000 and each tile comes out 999 × 1332. Slightly under native. It still reads fine on a phone, but Instagram upscales it, and upscaled tiles look softer than the ones either side of them if you mix sources.
The habit worth building is the same one behind choosing a print size: work out the pixels the output actually needs before you commit to the crop, not after.
The order is backwards, and that is where hand-cut grids die
Instagram builds the profile grid newest-first. Whatever you post right now takes the top-left slot and shoves every existing post one place to the right and down.
So a mural has to go up in reverse. The tile that belongs in the bottom-right corner is published first, and the top-left corner is published last. Work left-to-right like you’re reading and you’ll end up with a picture that’s inside out and upside down, which is the single most common way this fails.
Two rules go with it. Number your files in posting order the moment you export them, not later — nine near-identical crops in a folder are impossible to tell apart at 11pm. And don’t post anything else in between; one unrelated photo halfway through slides the whole mural diagonally.
Cutting it by hand
If you’d rather do it in Photoshop:
- Crop the photo to 3:4, and size it to 3240 × 4320 if you have the pixels for it.
- View → New Guide Layout, 3 columns and 3 rows, gutter set to 0.
- Take the Slice tool and choose Slices From Guides.
- File → Export → Save for Web, export all slices as JPEG.
- Rename them immediately in posting order, bottom-right as number 1.
Any editor with guides and a slice or export-as-grid function does the same thing. The arithmetic is the easy part; step 5 is the one people skip.
Or let the slicer do it
The Instagram Grid Slicer does all of the above from
one photo. It cuts nine tiles at up to 1080 × 1440, names them post-1 through
post-9 in posting order rather than reading order, and previews the assembled mural
with every cell numbered so you can see the sequence before you commit. You can fill
and crop to 3:4, or fit the whole frame inside the mural with a colour bar, and slide
the crop around if the important part of the photo isn’t dead centre. It never
upscales — below 1080 it exports at the real size rather than faking pixels you never

Like every calculator here it runs entirely in your browser. The photo never leaves the tab, which matters more than it sounds when the picture is a client’s wedding.
What happens to the mural after you post again
A grid only holds still if you add posts in multiples of three. A full new row pushes the mural down intact; one or two posts slide it diagonally and break it.
Two ways to live with that. Keep the mural at the bottom of your grid and build above it, so the rows you add later push it down as a block. Or use Instagram’s Reorder Grid — press and hold a post on your profile — which arrived in June 2026 and lets you drag things back into place without reposting. It’s app-only, so it won’t help you from a desktop.
Three across, if nine is too many
Nine posts is a lot to spend on one photograph, and it takes over your whole profile for a week. The cheaper version is a panorama: split one wide photo into three tiles that sit side by side in a single row.
Everything above still applies — same 3:4 tiles, same 1080 × 1440 each, same backwards posting order, with the right-hand slice going up first. The only number that changes is the shape of what you’re cutting up. Three tiles in a row make a strip 9:4, or 2.25 times wider than it is tall:
3240 × 1440 pixels — about 4.7 megapixels — in a 9:4 crop.
That’s the part worth knowing, because it flips the resolution problem on its head. The 24 MP file that only managed 999 px tiles as a nine-grid clears a panorama easily: a 6000 × 4000 frame cropped to 9:4 keeps its full 6000 px width, so each of the three tiles lands at the full 1080 × 1440 with pixels to spare. The mural is the demanding layout; the row is the forgiving one.
What it asks for instead is a wide photo. A 3:2 frame is 1.5 and a 4:3 frame is 1.33, both a long way short of 2.25, so filling a 9:4 strip from an ordinary frame means losing a serious amount of top and bottom — a landscape with sky and foreground to spare survives it, a portrait does not. An actual stitched panorama is usually much wider than 9:4 and only loses a little off the ends, which is the case this layout was made for.
Same fragility, too: a row of three shifts the moment you post a fourth thing, and
holds still if you post in multiples of three. It just costs three posts to try instead
of nine. The Instagram Grid Slicer has both — switch

post-1 through post-3 in the same reversed order.
Check your posting path before you commit
One last thing worth testing with a single tile rather than all nine — or all three. The phone app handles 3:4 natively, but the web uploader and third-party schedulers each ingest images their own way, and some re-encode or clamp to a different ratio on the way through. Post one tile, look at how it lands in the grid, then post the rest through the same path.
