Spot, Matrix, or Center-Weighted: Which One Is Lying to You

Spot metering reads the light from as little as 1 to 5 percent of your frame, depending on the camera. Matrix metering reads the whole thing, carved into dozens of zones, and compares the pattern against a database of scenes the manufacturer thinks it’s seen before. Center-weighted splits the difference, biased toward a circle in the middle and blind to the corners. Same scene, three different numbers back — and only one of them is usually right for what you’re trying to expose.
What each mode is actually measuring
Matrix metering (Nikon’s name for it; Canon calls it Evaluative, Sony calls it Multi) is the default on almost every camera because it’s right often enough. It reads the whole frame in a grid, weights the active focus point more heavily, and runs the pattern against scene data baked in at the factory — bright sky up top, darker ground below, that kind of thing. It’s good at “normal” scenes and bad at anything that breaks the pattern.
Center-weighted metering ignores that database entirely. Nikon bodies, for example, put around 75% of the weight on a circle in the center of the frame — anywhere from 6mm to 13mm across depending on the model — and let the weight taper off from there, ignoring the corners almost completely. No scene recognition, no focus-point tracking — just “what’s in the middle.” It was the standard mode before matrix metering existed, and it’s still predictable in a way matrix isn’t, because you always know exactly what it’s looking at.
Spot metering throws away everything except a small circle, usually tied to your active focus point on modern bodies. That 1-to-5% figure varies by manufacturer — Canon’s dedicated spot metering circle runs smaller than its “partial” metering option, which covers roughly 6-10% of the frame instead. Whatever the exact size, spot metering doesn’t care what the rest of the frame is doing. It bases the entire exposure on one small area and lets everything else fall where it falls.
Where matrix metering gets fooled
Every reflective meter — spot, matrix, or center-weighted — is built around the same assumption: it treats whatever it’s reading as if it averages out to a midtone. Point a meter at pure white snow and it tries to turn that snow gray, underexposing it. Point it at a black tuxedo and it tries to turn that gray too, overexposing it. Matrix metering fights this with scene recognition, but scene recognition only works on scenes that look like the ones it was trained against.
Backlighting is the classic failure. Shoot a subject with a bright sky or a window behind them and matrix metering sees a huge bright area and darkens the whole exposure to compensate — your subject’s face goes underexposed or turns into a silhouette, while the sky behind them looks fine. This is why “why does my subject keep coming out too dark when there’s a window behind them” is one of the most common exposure questions there is. The fix most people reach for first is dialing in +1 to +2 stops of exposure compensation and hoping. That works, but it’s a guess that changes every time the background brightness changes.
Off-center subjects are the second failure. Matrix metering weights the active focus point, but if your subject is small in the frame — a person against a big landscape, a bird against open sky — the surrounding scene still dominates the calculation. A dark subject against a bright field reads as underexposed subject, correctly exposed field. Center-weighted metering has the same problem in reverse: if your subject isn’t inside that central circle, it’s barely being measured at all.
When switching modes beats cranking compensation
Exposure compensation is a patch. It shifts the whole exposure by a fixed amount, which works if the ratio between subject and background stays constant — but change the amount of sky in frame, or how tightly you crop, and the same +1.5 stops you dialed in five minutes ago is now wrong. Switching to spot metering and pointing it at the actual subject fixes the cause instead of the symptom: meter directly off the person’s face, lock or hold that exposure, recompose, shoot. The reading no longer cares how bright the window behind them is, because the window was never part of the measurement.
The tradeoff is that spot metering demands more attention. You have to recompose or use exposure lock (AE-L) for every shot where the framing changes, and if you meter off skin that’s in shadow versus skin in direct light, you’ll get different exposures for the same person a few feet apart. It rewards a photographer who’s watching the light and punishes one who isn’t. Matrix metering is the better default for a fast-moving event where recomposing to meter every frame isn’t realistic — a reception dance floor, a street scene, anything where subjects and backgrounds change faster than you can chase them with a spot meter.
A practical middle path: leave matrix on for the bulk of a shoot, and switch to spot for the specific setups you know will fool it — backlit portraits, a subject in a spotlight against a dark stage, a bride in a white dress against a dark church interior. You don’t need to relearn your whole workflow, just recognize the handful of lighting setups that reliably break the default.
Running the numbers instead of guessing
Once you know a scene needs correction — whether from switching metering modes or dialing in compensation — the actual math is the same triangle: shutter, aperture, ISO, and how many stops you’re moving. Backlighting and metering mode come up together often outdoors with flash, where a mistrusted meter reading compounds with the flash sync speed ceiling most cameras have: trust a matrix reading that’s been fooled by the sky behind your subject, and you’ll spend the flash’s power fighting the wrong ambient exposure before sync speed ever enters the problem. The same stop-counting logic matters again once you start stacking ND filters — a spot meter reading taken off the actual subject before the filter goes on is a more reliable starting point than a matrix reading of the whole scene, for exactly the reason described above.
The mode isn’t right or wrong on its own. It’s a question of what you’re pointing the meter at and whether that matches what you actually want exposed correctly. Learn to recognize backlighting, off-center subjects, and high-contrast scenes on sight, and switching modes stops being a menu dive and starts being reflexive — the same way checking your histogram became automatic once you stopped trusting the LCD preview.
