Shooting a Wedding on One Card Is a Bet You Don't Need

Professional data recovery on a corrupted memory card runs $300 to $1,800, and most labs will only quote a price after they’ve already opened it up - if the flash controller is dead, you can spend nothing and still get nothing back. That’s the real cost of shooting a wedding on a single card: not the card itself, which is cheap, but the gap between “recoverable” and “gone” that a second card slot closes for the price of one extra memory card.

Most current mirrorless and DSLR bodies aimed at working photographers ship with two card slots. The problem isn’t the hardware. It’s that a lot of photographers set the second slot to the wrong mode and don’t find out until the first card fails.

Backup mode and overflow mode do opposite jobs

Dual-slot cameras give you a choice for how the second card behaves, and the two options solve different problems:

  • Backup (mirror) mode writes every frame to both cards at once. Slot 1 and slot 2 end the day as identical copies of the same shoot. If one card corrupts, fails, or gets lost, the other one has everything.
  • Overflow (relay) mode writes to slot 1 until it fills up, then switches to slot 2 automatically. You get more total capacity before you have to swap cards, but for most of the day only one card holds any given frame.

Overflow mode feels like the better deal - you’re not burning two cards’ worth of space to store one card’s worth of photos. That math is exactly backwards for a wedding. The moment slot 1 fails during the ceremony, every frame that hasn’t overflowed to slot 2 yet is on that one failed card and nowhere else. Overflow mode protects you against running out of space. It does nothing against corruption, and corruption is the actual risk a second slot exists to cover. For anything you can’t reshoot - a first kiss, vows, a father-daughter dance - backup mode is the only setting that matches the stakes. Save overflow mode for jobs where you can genuinely afford to lose whatever’s on the card that dies: travel, wildlife, stock work you’ll reshoot next season.

What to do the second a card throws an error

If a card errors, corrupts, or a camera stops recognizing it mid-shoot, what you do in the next five minutes decides whether the images are recoverable:

  1. Stop shooting on that card immediately. Every new frame written to a failing card is a chance to overwrite the sectors holding the images you already have.
  2. Don’t format it, and don’t try to “fix” it in-camera. A format or a repair attempt is the fastest way to turn a recoverable card into an unrecoverable one.
  3. Pull it and swap in a fresh card, then keep shooting on your backup slot without missing coverage.
  4. Read it with a card reader later, not the camera. Recovery software (PhotoRec, Recuva, Disk Drill, and similar tools) works directly against the card’s raw data and should write anything it recovers to a different drive - never back onto the same card.
  5. If the card is physically damaged - bent, cracked, dunked - stop trying software fixes and send it to a data recovery lab instead. Chip-level recovery exists for exactly this and most labs won’t charge you if nothing comes back.

None of that helps if the only copy of the frame was already gone because slot 2 was set to overflow instead of backup. The five-minute triage above is what backup mode buys you time to do calmly instead of in a panic between the ceremony and the reception.

The storage math backup mode actually changes

Backup mode isn’t free. Writing every frame twice means you need double the card capacity to shoot the same job - a 128 GB card pair in backup mode holds 128 GB of actual images, not 256 GB, because slot 2 is a mirror, not extra room. That’s the tradeoff photographers are avoiding when they reach for overflow mode: it looks like it stretches your capacity further, and it does, at the cost of the exact protection a second slot is for.

The honest way to budget for it is to size your cards for backup mode from the start rather than bolting the mirror on top of a capacity plan built for a single card. Run your camera’s real megapixel count and your typical frame count for a full day through the storage calculator - it’ll show you the actual GB a wedding produces, and from there the arithmetic is just “buy cards sized to hold that twice.” It’s a one-time hardware cost, the same amortized-per-wedding math we walked through in what a wedding actually costs in storage, and it’s a much smaller number than a $300-$1,800 recovery bill or an unrecoverable gallery.

It’s also worth being clear about what backup mode does and doesn’t cover. Two cards mirroring each other in the same camera protects you against one card failing - it does nothing if the whole camera is lost, stolen, or destroyed, cards and all. That’s a different failure mode from the one cloud sync gets mistaken for a backup against: dual cards are your first line of defense on the day itself, and getting the files off both cards onto a working drive and a real offsite backup as soon as you’re home is what covers you against everything backup mode can’t touch.

The one setting worth checking tonight

If you’ve never explicitly set your second slot to backup mode, check it before your next booking - on most bodies it’s buried one menu deeper than the default. It costs you card capacity you’ll get back the next time you upgrade to bigger cards anyway, and it’s the difference between a corrupted card being an inconvenience you swap out mid-ceremony and it being a conversation you don’t want to have with a client.
